Ruo-Hsin Wu (b. 1993) is a Taiwanese visual artist working across painting, illustration, and moving images. She holds an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art in the UK and a BA in Animation from Taipei National University of the Arts. Wu’s works inherit the spirit of traditional Eastern painting, blending Western painting techniques with influences from Japanese aesthetics and contemporary pop culture. Her paintings have been presented in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, and Taiwan.
Her inspiration often comes from personal experience, especially memories from childhood. Her paintings depict recurring figures of girls and animals set against black backgrounds, like film negatives capturing moments of childhood and daily life. Using both her fingers and brushes, she rubs and layers paint on the surface, leaving traces and textures. Through low-saturation colors and overlapping layers, she creates translucent spaces where memory drifts between presence and absence, exploring how fleeting impressions connect the past and the present. Within these scenes, a dreamy yet bittersweet mood fluctuates between innocence and the grotesque. Each image carries both tenderness and depth, inviting viewers to enter the movement of emotion and memory.
The artist notes: “There are moments in life that stay with us forever. But I don’t try to recreate those scenes, because memory is personal. What I hope to capture is the emotion and atmosphere of that moment—perhaps through the depiction of a gaze, or the moisture in the air.
